The New England Baseball Complex hosted it’s 2018 12u Spring Classic baseball tournament. The Seacoast United Pirates 12u Gold team walked away with a championship, after a 10 inning come from behind win over number one ranked Legends Baseball. The Pirates went 5-0 on the weekend and outscored their opponents 48-11. The Pirates went 3-0 in Pool play by way of defeating North East Baseball, the Beantown Bombers, and the GBG Hawks. The Pirates grabbed the two seed and faced off against the North East Gators. The Pirates got a stellar pitching performance out of Noah Fitzgerald who threw a 6 inning, 63 pitch no hitter to send the Pirates to the Championship after an 8-1 win.
It was a showdown in the finals as both the Legends and the Pirates had two great left handed pitchers on the mound and they matched each other pitch for pitch, for the first three innings. The Legends struck first in the bottom of the fourth after a walk, single, and three run homerun. The Pirates were down, but battled back to make the score 3-1 in the top of the fifth, and after a two out error by the Legends, the lead was trimmed to 3-2. A sliding catch with two outs in the top of the fifth kept the lead in tact for the Legends. They added a run in the bottom of the fifth and the Pirates looked at a two run deficit heading into the sixth.
A fortunate bounce got the Pirates a leadoff runner on, and Maison Mathews doubled to give the Pirates runners on second and third with nobody out. A pass ball made the score 4-3, and with two outs Mathews straight stole home, and beat the pitch to the plate to tie the game. The bases stayed empty until the Pirates found themselves starring at runners on second and third in the bottom of the 9th, while the Legends had the heart of their lineup due up. A strikeout, and two pop ups got the Pirates out of the inning and momentum on their side. In the top of the 10th, the Pirates got a leadoff single by Will Shaheen, a walk by Sebastian Lampert, and after a sacrifice bunt by Jon Wasserman, the Pirates had the go ahead runners on second and third with one out. A strikeout gave the Legends two outs with the Pirates George Young due up. The Legends decided to intentionally walk Young, which gave Jacob Fredericks the opportunity to be a hero. Fredericks hit the first pitch he saw over the right center field fence for a go ahead grand slam. The Pirates erupted, and rode the momentum to a three up three down bottom of the 10th and celebrated the win. The Pirates showed poise and determination on their way to the Championship.
