ESSEX, MA – Alana Richardson (2021), current member of the Seacoast United Field Hockey Club (Boxford, MA), was recently selected for the U17 Women’s US National Team roster.

Being selected for the US National Team is a huge accomplishment for a field hockey athlete from the Northeast. The road to the U17 Women’s National Team has been a long and difficult process, however, the opportunity to be considered for the U17 team is a testament to Alana’s unwavering work ethic, possessing the abilities of an exceptional athlete and her engaging personality on and off the field.

USA Field Hockey established the Futures Program in 1990 to create an opportunity for approximately 5,000 athletes across the country to train with high level coaches in the off-season.  The Futures Program also provides athletes a chance to be considered for the US Women’s National Teams at the U17-U21 age groups through the Olympic Development Pipeline.  The first stage of the Olympic Development Pipeline is the Regional Futures Tournament where all nine regions across the country select the top athletes from each region to move onto the National Futures Championship, which takes place at Spooky Nook Sports in Lancaster, PA, home of the US Women’s National Team.

While attending the National Futures Championship, athletes will have the opportunity to be selected to the Stars and Stripes Elite Teams (2016, 2017, 2018) which consist of the top tier of athletes at the National Futures Championship as well as other elite programs including the Junior National Camp (2018) and the AAU Junior Olympic Games (2016, 2017).  Alana was selected for all of these elite programs since participating in the Futures Program which opened up the door for Alana to earn a spot on the U17 Women’s National Team.

When selected for Junior National Camp, Alana was one of 110 athletes that were competing for a spot on the roster for the U17 Women’s National Team.  By the end of training camp, only 30 athletes were selected per age group and Alana was one of only two players from the Northeast Region.

The next challenge Alana faces is solidifying a spot on the roster for the competition team for the U17 Women’s National Team which will participate in a Germany Tour in April 2019.  The Seacoast United Field Hockey staff wishes Alana luck as she participates in training camp over the next few months!  CONGRATULATIONS to Alana as there is no athlete more deserving to be a part of this opportunity!
