Seacoast United’s U16 Girls Phantoms defeated East Meadow SC Eagles in penalties to win the Massapequa College Showcase Tournament December 10th-12th, finishing with a 4-0 record on the weekend.
The GU16 Seacoast United Phantoms team travelled to Long Island over the weekend of December 10th-12th for the 2011 Massapequa College Showcase tournament. Although the team had trained together for a couple weeks, this was the first time that the girls had played together as a group. The weekend started with a match against Manhattan SC, and the SUSC girls earned a 2-1 win. The girls next played a tough team from Lindenhurst NJ. The match went back and forth with both team seeing scoring opportunities, however Phantoms player Zoe Hazelwood found the back of the net in the last minutes of regulation to secure a 1-0 victory.
On Sunday, the team met Cold Spring Harbor/Huntington SC in the tournament semi-final match. The game was deadlocked at 1-1 until the last 30 seconds of regulation when Phantoms player Krista Smith made a great penetrating run and then laid the ball back to a charging Peyton Kent who confidently placed it past the opposing keeper. The final match against East Meadow SC Eagles provided just as much excitement as both teams fought hard through regulation and 2 overtime periods with a score of 0-0. The match came down to penalty kicks, in which Phantoms keeper Merissa Brousseau came up with a key save to notch the victory and tournament championship for the team.
The weekend success provided a great start for this year’s team, and everyone is excited for the spring NEP season.
