The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup enters its 103rd year of competition as U.S. Soccer prepares for the start of the 2016 tournament in May. This year’s US Open Cup is the largest to date, as it will involve 92 teams from professional and amateur levels of soccer in the United States.
2016 marks the 2nd appearance in franchise history for the Seacoast United Phantoms. In 2015, the Phantoms defeated Global Premier Soccer (USASA) in the first round in a dramatic 2-1 victory while down to 10 men, scoring the winning goal in the 88th minute. Advancing to the 2nd round, the Phantoms took on Tulsa Roughnecks (USL) in Oklahoma, falling by the score of 1-0.
The pairings for the First Round of the competition were announced on Wednesday April 6th, with the Seacoast United Phantoms (PDL) vs. Southie FC (USASA) at Harry Della Russo Stadium in Revere, MA; 8pm kickoff on May 11th.
All 24 First Round matches will take place on Wednesday, May 11th, including 19 PDL teams, 15 NPSL teams, and 14 local qualifiers. These 48 teams are considered "Open Division Teams", and due to geographical matchups those from the same qualifying pool cannot be paired to play against each other in the first round.
Teams who win their First Round matches will then advance to the Second Round, where 18 USL clubs will enter the competition. All 21 games will take place on May 18th.
Progressing through the tournament, 15 Third Round games are scheduled for June 1st as North America Soccer League (NASL) teams enter the contest. Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs enter during the 4th round, with matches taking place June 15th.
The Phantoms open their 2016 Premier Development League schedule on Saturday, May 7th when they host the Western Mass Pioneers at Portsmouth High School for a 7pm kickoff. The team then faces a tough stretch of three consecutive road games before returning home on June 1st.
Finishing the 2015 season in 2nd place in the Northeast Division with an overall record of 9-4-2 (including playoffs), the Phantoms look to field a competitive squad once again this season as they make a push for the division title.
