Division Rivals End in Scoreless Draw

June 3rd, 2015

GPS GK Williams beats SUSC's Anthony Grant to the ball during the first half in Wednesday's 0-0 draw.

MANCHESTER, NH - It was a similar scenario to the first matchup this season between the Seacoast United Phantoms and GPS Portland Phoenix: Seacoast United pushing forward on the attack and earning a corner in the closing seconds of the game.  This time around, Phoenix goalkeeper Matt Williams denied Phantoms’ Anthony Grant’s bid at the winning header with a spectacular save in the 90th minute to keep a clean sheet as the game ended 0-0.

Back in May, the teams would trade goals in the final 11 minutes resulting in Grant’s 2-1 game winner in Portland.

With two of the division’s top goalkeepers in Williams and Seacoast United’s Dom DiMaggio, it figured to be a close match.  The result was fair, considering Phoenix controlled play in the first half, and the Phantoms in the 2nd.

Seacoast United’s record now stands at 4-0-1 in the division, posting 4 shutouts in 5 matches, allowing only one goal against.  GPS Portland now sits at 1-1-2.

Players and coaches from Seacoast Express United showed their support of the Phantoms in full uniform tonight as part of the club's "Appreciation Day", with children from SEU's Grassroots program serving as mascots before the game.  Players from SEU's club teams participated in the guard of honor and assisted with ball boy/ball girl duties during the game.  The coaches from Seacoast Express United were presented with an autographed Seacoast United Phantoms jersey for the organization to display.

The Phantoms enter a stretch where they see a 10 day break in the schedule, picking up again on June 13th when they travel to Queens, NY to face FA Euro from the PDL’s Mid Atlantic Division to begin a tough 4 matches in a 7 day stretch through June 19th before wrapping up with a rematch vs. GPS Portland in Maine on June 28th.  The four remaining games on July’s schedule all take place at Portsmouth High School.
