Seacoast United won a very hard fought game with Mass United on Wednesday night at Manning Field in Lynn, MA by a 3-2 decision. The Phantoms jumped out to a quick start with forward Trent Roy scoring twice in the opening four minutes of the game off of set pieces. As a stunned United squad tried to get it together, Seacoast continued to play extremely well for the remainder of the first half.
The second half was a completely different story. Mass United came charging out, making several tactical adjustments and putting pressure on the Phantoms immediately. The home team cut the deficit in half in the 51st minute when a 30-yard “screamer” got to the left of keeper Travis Worra and landed just below the cross bar. The pressure continued, becoming even more stifling, until Mass United netted the equalizer 7 minutes later.
With more than 30 minutes left the home team gathered momentum and put the young Phantoms team under pressure but the defense comprising of James Costello, Brendan Caslin, Sean McDonald and Jeff Turner held firm and solid goalkeeping from Worra supported their resolute game. But to their credit, Seacoast did not panic. They kept the organized defense they had played throughout and were able to withstand the absolute barrage of scoring opportunities United continued to create. The Phantoms found their second wind and several opportunities squandered by Colin Smith (who was outstanding throughout the game), Robert Palumbo, brother James Palumbo, and Sean Bahktiari made it an exciting second half where anything could happen in a frantic, vocal and hostile environment which made it a passionate affair for both squads.
In the final minutes, Seacoast United was able to put together some counter attacks and were rewarded for their patience when a foul in the box on striker Christian Rodriguez gave Seacoast a penalty. The kick was taken and converted by Jimmy Petruccelli in the 89th minute, giving the visitors an unlikely lead and, a few minutes later, the win.
The Phantoms host NY Red Bull on Saturday, June 2nd at Portsmouth High School for a 5pm kickoff. Tickets are available online at www.seacoastunited.com/phantoms: $5 for Adults, $3 for youth (ages 5-18) and children under 5 are free.
