Division rivals will face each other once again this season as the seeding for the PDL Northeast Divisional Playoff round was announced. The top two teams in the division will compete in the 2015 playoff on Tuesday, July 21st when GPS Portland Phoenix (8-1-5) host Seacoast United Phantoms (9-2-3) at Yarmouth High School. Kickoff is set for 7pm.
The two teams were tied in points with 29 at the conclusion of the regular season, but GPS earned the right to host the playoff game as they held the edge in head to head competition with a record of 2-1-1. The combined score in those 4 matches is just 3-2 in favor of GPS.
"We are looking forward to the opportunity to compete," commented Seacoast United Phantoms head coach Iain Scott. "We need to grasp this in order to progress to the next round in the Eastern Conference."
The Phantoms look to striker Anthony Grant and midfielders Abel Perez (6 goals, 5 assists, 17 pts) and Terence Carter (6 goals, 1 assist, 13 pts) for their offensive punch heading into the playoffs. Grant leads the entire Premier Development League in points with 28 as he has posted 12 goals and 4 assists in 12 games. He is a 2014 PDL MVP finalist and is receiving much attention once again this season.
The team's outlook on Tuesday's match is positive, as the players have been working hard at training and are ready both mentally and physically.
"Its always going to be a tough game when we play against GPS, but it is overdue for us to beat them," said Grant. "We have put the time in as far as preparation for this game, and as a result we are looking to get the job done."
Phoenix is anchored by goalkeeper Matthew Williams, who has posted 5 shutouts and a .642 goals against average during the regular season. In the four games vs. Seacoast United, Williams has pulled off some spectacular acrobatic saves to frustrate the Phantoms attack.
At the other end of the field is Phantoms goalkeeper Dom DiMaggio who is tied for 2nd in the Premier Development League with 9 wins. DiMaggio has played in all 14 games this season and recorded 56 saves.
The winner of Tuesday's match will advance to play in the Eastern Conference Final Four taking place July 24-26th, consisting of teams from the Northeast Division (1), Mid Atlantic Division (2) and South Atlantic Division (1). Seedings will be determined after the results of all divisional playoff games taking place on July 21st.
