PORTSMOUTH, NH - The Seacoast United Phantoms opened their 2011 home season today at Portsmouth High School with a doubleheader that featured the Women’s squad taking on the Boston Aztec (Boston Breakers Reserve team) at 1pm, followed by the Men’s PDL team vs Western Mass Pioneers at 4pm.

It was the first game of the 2011 WPSL season for the Phantom women as they faced the 2010 WPSL National Champion Aztecs. Seacoast got off to a sluggish start, giving up a 6th minute goal from Carson Laderoute on a 1v1 situation up the middle fed from Krista McKinnon. Once they settled down, Seacoast were able to pass the ball efficiently and slow the attack of the Aztec.
In the 2nd half, Caitlin Flynn scored in the 70th minute, giving Aztec the 2-0 lead. It was short lived however, as Danielle Courtemanche scored the Phantoms first goal of the season off a corner kick from Emma Clark. Just four minutes later, the Phantoms struck again and found the equalizer on a goal from Brooke Duchaney. Kelley Griffin got in behind the defense, played a looping ball into the center of the field for Duchaney who attempted a 1-time shot from the top of the box. After an initial mis-hit, Duchaney struck an acrobatic side-volley over the sprawling Aztec goalkeeper.
The Phantoms Men’s squad, found themselves fighting from a 0-1 deficit for the 2nd time in as many games this season. Forward Andrew Henshaw gave the Pioneers the lead in the 21st minute, scoring off of a corner kick. The Phantoms displayed great ball control and passing but were not able to penetrate the Pioneer back line.
They found the equalizer in the 2nd half. On the weekend of the Club’s golf tournament held in his late father’s name, Eric Masi scored the Phantom’s first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 in the 65th minute. (See the highlight from WMUR here.) The Pioneers quickly jumped back in front, scoring in the 72nd minute on a goal by Kyle Clancy. The Phantoms kept the pressure on with several quality chances in the last 18 minutes but could not capitalize on their opportunities.
The Phantoms NPSL team earned their first victory of the season today with a 3-2 win away at Mass United FC. The hosts went up 1-0 in the first half, and stretched the lead to 2-0 early in the 2nd. In the 83rd minute, Colin Smith off a rebound on a strike from Kevin Pope put the Phantoms on the board to cut the lead to 1. Sean Bakhtiari pounced on another rebound to even the score just two minutes later. In the 90th minute, Paul Latif scored from 20 yds out to the bottom corner for a dramatic 3-2 win.
