LUDLOW, MA - The Seacoast United Phantoms return to the PDL playoffs with Friday's 1-0 victory over the Western MA Pioneers at Lusitano Stadium.
Always a tough opponent, the Pioneers kept the pressure on the Phantoms defense the entire game as they fought to stay alive in the Northeast Division playoff race. Being 7 points behind the Phantoms with 4 games remaining, the Pioneers needed a positive result in tonight's match.
That would be no easy task, seeing as the Phantoms defense has allowed the lowest number of goals in the entire league (5). The back three of Ben Brewster, Pablo Agudo, and Andrew Chaput were organized and difficult to break down, especially with the Pioneers' leading scorer Junior Alencar missing from the lineup.
It wasn't until the 84th minute that the visitors took the lead. Three-time PDL Team of the Week honoree Anthony Grant scored his 12th goal of the season as the Phantoms extend their winning streak to 8 games. Goalkeeper Dom DiMaggio earned the shutout in goal, which is the team's 8th on the year.
"The rewards we are receiving at this time are down to a full team effort on and off the field," noted head coach Iain Scott. "We will continue to prepare well for future games and enjoy the ride as long as it lasts."
This will be the first playoff appearance for the Phantoms since 2011 when they won the Northeast Division title and advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The Northeast Division leading Phantoms' record improves to 9-1-2 on the season with 2 games remaining. Seacoast United will host Real Boston Rams in their last regular season home game Thursday, July 17th at Portsmouth High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
On that evening, the Phantoms encourage fans to celebrate the Spirit of Behaylu Barry, a 13-yr old boy and Seacoast United youth player from Stratham who is recovering from a bone marrow transplant after being diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia this spring. A portion of all gate receipts will be donated to Behaylu Barry/Annie's Angels Memorial Fund, who are fundraising for Behaylu's family.
