Phantoms Score First, But Albany Battles Back For 2-1 Win

Saturday, June 25th

ALBANY, NY - It was a very hard fought match and both teams had multiple opportunities to score in Saturday's WPSL game between the Seacoast United Phantoms and Albany Alleycats. Elise Amioka (Colgate) hit the woodwork twice in the first half and Kelly Spencer (UNH) had her header cleared off the line. Seacoast struck first 10 minutes into the 2nd half when Krista Johnstone (Bryant) played a ball back to Emma Clark (BU) and spun out towards goal.  Clark played a great ball into the path of Gaby Ransom (Holy Cross) who took a her first touch in behind the Albany defense.  Ransom played a bending ball across the box to Johnstone who finished nicely over the onrushing keeper for a 1-0 lead.

Albany equalized 15 minutes later off a header that appeared to be going out over the crossbar but dropped just in front of the crossbar and spun into the goal. Both teams had chances in the final 15 minutes but Albany got the benefit of foul call from the linesman that gave them a free kick in the 88th minute. The ball was served in the box and ended up bouncing to an open Albany player who tucked it in the net for the 2-1 win.

Coach Wallis commented: "It was a very good effort from the entire team and I felt we really deserved at least a point from the match but things don’t always go your way on the road. It was a physical, hard fought match that could have easily gone either way.

The Phantoms are on the road for their next two games before returning home for their final match of the season.  The last home game is Thursday, July 14th at Exeter High School when the women kick off at 3:30 in the matinee prior to the Oxford United/Seacoast United Phantoms game at 6:30pm.
