LUDLOW, MA - Seacoast United scored two goals in a span of 5 minutes for their 2nd victory of the season with a 2-1 win over the Western Mass Pioneers on Friday night.
Veteran defenders James Goodwin and Jordan Thomas set the tone for a strong performance by the back line once again.
"They were outstanding," said head coach Iain Scott. "Our midfield struggled at times to put pressure on the ball, making us rely more on our back line."
The first half was domainted by the Pioneers, who took a 1-0 lead into halftime. However, Scott made adjustments to his lineup and the Phantoms responded by controlling play during the opening 20 minutes. Two Seacoast goals quickly changed the game, giving the Phantoms the upper hand. In the 62nd minute, a Brad Hilton corner was chipped in by James Goodwin to even the match at 1-1. Just a few minutes later, midfielder Steven Palumbo collected a pass from striker Dylan George at the edge of the box, and dribbled past Pioneer defenders before beating the goalkeeper low to the right.
Scott also praised the play of striker Kenny Doublette in his season debut for the Phantoms.
Seacoast hosts its first PDL home game of the 2012 season on Sunday, May 13th when they face CFC Azul (0-1-0) for a 7pm kickoff at Portsmouth High School. The Phantoms will give away free mini soccer balls at the gate to children under 18 (while supplies last). Tickets can be purchased online or at the gate: $5 for adults, $3 for youth ages 5-18, and children under 5 are free.
