PORTSMOUTH, NH – The Seacoast United Phantoms played host to visiting NY Red Bull in a matchup that was sure to showcase speed and skill from the visiting side.   During the first 10 minutes of today’s match, Red Bull dominated possession with the Phantoms scrambling to apply pressure against a very technical team.  The hard work on the defensive side of the ball resulted in a quick transition in the 11th minute, when Chris Tsonis chipped the Red Bull keeper who tipped the ball in an attempt to send it over the bar.  The save attempt fell short, but Red Bull defender Mark Brode was able to clear it off of the goal line.  The ensuing rebound was collected again by Tsonis who blasted a shot to the far right side of the net, giving the Phantoms the 1-0 early lead.  Just a minute later, Phantoms GK Giovanni Sinclair denied the Red Bull attack with a brilliant reaction save over the cross bar.

The 2nd half opened with some scary moments in the Phantoms defensive end, with NY winning a couple corner kicks that required the Seacoast defenders to make some acrobatic moves in order to keep the ball out of the net.  From that point, play went back and forth with each team building on their attack.  A stingy Seacoast United defense smothered any chances from Red Bull and held on through the remainder of the half to secure the win.

Head coach Iain Scott was extremely pleased with his team’s performance.  “The lads carried out their instructions perfectly,” said Scott, who had the midfield play more of a compact formation in the second half to counter the speed and skill of Red Bull.

With today’s result, the Phantoms now sit alone at the top of the Northeast-Atlantic Conference of the NPSL with 10 points.  The next home game for the Seacoast United Phantoms is Friday, June 24th when they host Mass United FC at Exeter High School for a 6:30pm kickoff.  Information on the Phantoms can be found online at
