Phantoms Open WPSL Season With 3-1 Victory

DERRYFIELD, NH – Seacoast United Phantoms women got off to a great start this season with a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island Reds FC at Derryfield High School on Sunday afternoon on goals by Kendal Ham, Rachel Hill, and Emily Richard.

DERRYFIELD, NH – Seacoast United Phantoms women got off to a great start this season with a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island Reds FC at Derryfield High School on Sunday afternoon. 

They started the game brightly when Kendall Ham hit the post after 2 minutes and was unfortunate that the rebound fell nicely to the Rhode Island goalkeeper. Shayla Bergeron and Maddie MacLean were next to try their luck put both seen their efforts go over the bar.

Rhode Island were dangerous on the break as their striker just shot wide of the post after 20 minutes and later the Phantoms needed Mimi Borkan, Ally Day and Katie Day to intervene to stop the visitors from sneaking a goal.  The Phantoms enjoyed most of the possession in the first half and had a few shots from distance but went to the break still locked at 0-0.

The second half started just as the first began, as Rachel Hill found herself bearing down on the visitor’s net but the goalkeeper managed to get a touch to force it wide of the goal. Seacoast United's pressure finally resulted the opening goal of the game when Shayla Bergeron played Kendall Ham through to finish inside the box after 50 minutes. 

In the blistering heat, the game started to slow down but the home side still managed to create opportunities as Lauren Triglione fired a shot but was tipped wide. Then the Phantoms doubled their lead as Rachel Hill skipped passed two defenders and fired high into the net in the 62nd minute.
Rhode Island still posed a threat as they hit the post on the 63rd minute and Jackie Ham blocked a shot on 65th minute. 

Emily Richards sealed the victory for the Phantoms as she followed up on a Lily Radack rebound that had hit the post to make it 3-0 on 80th minute.
Rhode Island still pressured and got a consolation goal in the 89th minute to make the final score 3-1.

The Phantoms next game is Saturday 30th May against Boston Aztec at North Reading High School kick off 3pm.
